WHEN YOUR POND BEGINS TO THAW… Depending on our season, it may be another couple weeks before that happens. Here are some tips for you. You may see lots of string algae. That’s okay since nothing is taking the nutrients out of the water at this time and the bacteria is not yet active. Don’t panic! It’s the only green plant growing so leave it alone. Once your pond is cleaned out, some algae may grow again. Remember, it will probably still be cold and the above information is still relevant. Once the pond’s water temperature is above 50 degrees, you can start adding Aquascape Coldwater Beneficial Bacteria, at 60 degrees Aquascape Beneficial Bacteria for Ponds dry or liquid. Your fish may look like they need to eat and even come to the surface looking for their first spring treat, but don’t do it! Wait until the water temperature will remain over 50 degrees. (If you feed them now, your fish could suffer.)
WANT TO HAVE YOUR POND CLEANED OUT THIS SPRING BY OUR CREW OF POND PRO’S? Our typical “spring cleanout” includes the following steps… The cleanout crew will pump the water out of the pond, net out the fish and store them in a tub of water taken from the pond. The boulders and the gravel will then be washed to remove excess algae, leaves, etc. Dead foliage, leaves etc will be removed by hand. Aquatic plants will be pruned and fertilized. Displaced rocks and gravel will be replaced, covering any exposed liner, leaving your pond looking as good as new! All filter media will be washed and installed in their proper places, pumps will be hooked up and tested. Pond lights will be tested and bulbs replaced as necessary. Finally, your fish will be released back into your pond and a dose of beneficial “Aquaclearer” bacteria will be added to jump start your pond’s ecosystem. Your pond will be well on its way to bring you another season of enjoyment!
WHAT IS THE COST OF A “TYPICAL SPRING CLEANOUT?” We bill $65 per man hour. A regular cleanout is normally $225 to $325, excluding additional pond supplies. This cost may vary if your pond is larger than an 11’ x 16’ or if it hasn’t been cleaned out in several years. Pond cleanouts will begin Mid March and will be completed by Mid April.
